A statistical breakdown illumnating the failure of Thomas Rongen:

| |
D.C. United under Bruce "Midas" Arena:
United under Bruce Arena (all competitions): 1996 23-13 MLS Cup Champion; U.S. Open Cup Champion 1997 24-8 MLS Cup Champion; 1998 24-8 MLS Cup Finalist; CONCACAF Champions Cup Champion; InterAmerican Cup Champion Total 71-29 (.710)

The Honorable Bruce Arena

D.C. United under Thomas "Smoking Dutchman" Rongen:
United under Thomas Rongen (all competitions): 1999 22-9 Won MLS Cup,largely in our opinion due to the continuity provided by assistant coach Dave Sarachan. 2000 10-19-6 Failed to qualify for MLS playoffs for first time in team history; alienated many, if not most, of the players.
2001 3-7-0 Traded a third of the team, including two U.S. national team defenders, for young potentially talented players. Not surprisingly, the defense has struggled thus far in the season.
Total 35-35-6 (.500)
